A Mother's Perspective on Her Son's Racing Dreams
Nicole Piastri's story begins in the bayside suburb of Brighton, where her son Oscar's love for cars blossomed from a young age. From radio-controlled racing to go-karting and eventually race cars, there was no stopping Oscar's passion. Despite the efforts of both grandparents, who are mechanics, and his father, who owns a car tuning business, Oscar's destiny was set.
The turning point came when Oscar's father, Chris Piastri, made a life-changing decision. He signed their 14-year-old son up to move to Europe to pursue his F1 dream. Nicole recalls the moment Chris called, saying, "I've emailed you a list of the stuff he needs. We'll be home in a week, and we're good to go." Little did she know, this decision would impact their family dynamics and shape Oscar's future.
Being away from her son at such a young age was challenging for Nicole. One particularly sobering moment occurred when Oscar, then 16, was racing in the F4 in the UK. Accompanied by his father, Oscar was involved in a disastrous crash that left another driver, Billy Monger, with both legs amputated. Nicole, who was in Phillip Island with her three daughters, received a text from Chris saying, "There's been an incident." The footage she saw was so disturbing that it made her physically ill.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the trauma, Oscar seemed largely unaffected by the incident. When Nicole asked him how he felt about racing the following weekend, he replied, "I'm in the car every second weekend." Nicole realized it was best not to burden him with her anxiety.
Since then, Nicole has developed a plan for each of Oscar's races. She doesn't dwell on the risks, but she knows exactly how to get to him quickly if needed. It's a mother's instinct and a testament to her unwavering support.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite Oscar's success and fame, Nicole remains grounded. When asked if her son's rise to fame had changed him, Nicole was adamant that he remains the same. She recalled a FaceTime call from Oscar, who was staying at the Royal Palace in Bahrain. When she asked him to remove his head from a potentially valuable tapestry, he replied, "It looks pretty old and crappy." Oscar's room was a mess, with clothes thrown everywhere, including boxer shorts on lampshades. Nicole's response? "Pick up your clothes!"
Even with Oscar's meteoric success on the track, Nicole admits she's not a big fan of Formula 1. She would have preferred him to be a golfer or tennis player, but she supports his passion. When reminded that she could have stopped him from moving overseas as a teenager, Nicole said, "I could have, but I chose to let him go and break my heart rather than make him stay and break his."
As the Australian Grand Prix approaches, Nicole knows she won't see much of her son this weekend. But she's happy to support his dreams, even from a distance.
