AI Use at Work Rises

A growing share of U.S. workers reports using AI at work, with noticeable jumps from Q2 to Q3 2025. The portion of employees who used AI at least a few times a year climbed from 40% to 45%. Those using AI frequently—several times per week or more—rose from 19% to 23%, while daily usage edged up modestly from 8% to 10% in the same period.

Gallup’s latest Workforce results are based on a nationally representative survey of 23,068 U.S. adults employed full- or part-time, conducted online August 5–19 through the Gallup Panel.

Knowledge-based workers, such as those in technology or professional services, reported higher AI usage than frontline staff. Specifically, 76% of workers in technology or information systems, 58% in finance, and 57% in professional services used AI a few times a year or more. In contrast, in industries with larger frontline workforces, AI usage at that frequency was 33% in retail, 37% in healthcare, and 38% in manufacturing.

Workforce Divided Over AI Adoption at the Org Level

In Q3 2025, 37% of employees said their organization has implemented AI technology to boost productivity, efficiency, and quality. Forty percent said their organization has not, and 23% said they did not know. The share saying “don’t know” was smaller than the share who reported some AI use at work but larger than the share who used AI frequently. This gap suggests that some employees relied on personal AI tools or otherwise used AI without being aware of their organization’s official AI strategy.

Among roles, individual contributors (26%) were more likely to say they did not know whether their organization had implemented AI than managers (16%) or leaders (7%). Part-time workers, on-site staff, and employees in frontline roles or industries also reported higher uncertainty. Those further from formal decision-making tended to be less aware of AI adoption.

A prior version of this question did not include a “don’t know” option, which effectively pushed respondents to guess. When that option existed, the share believing their organization had implemented AI rose from 33% in May 2024 to 44% in May 2025, while those saying it had not implemented AI fell from 67% to 56%.

In the current survey, Gallup added a “don’t know” option to capture uncertainty about AI adoption. Because respondents could indicate a lack of knowledge, the Q3 2025 results aren’t directly comparable to earlier measurements. The fact that 23% chose “don’t know” underscores substantial variation in how well information about AI adoption is reaching employees.

Employees Use AI to Consolidate Information and Spark Ideas

In Q2 2025, more than four in 10 employees who used AI at least yearly reported using AI to consolidate information (42%) and to generate ideas (41%), with 36% saying they used it to learn new things. These purposes remained broadly consistent with Gallup’s initial measures from Q2 2024.

When asked about the specific types of AI tools used on the job, over six in 10 employees who used AI at work reported employing chatbots or virtual assistants. The next most common tools were AI writing/editing tools (36%), followed by AI coding assistants (14%).

Advanced or specialized AI tools—such as those aimed at data science, analytics, or coding—remain relatively uncommon, but frequent AI users are more likely to employ them. The biggest gaps between frequent and less frequent users appear in coding assistants (22% vs. 8%) and data science or analytics tools (18% vs. 8%).

Implications

AI adoption in the workplace is expanding, with 45% of employees reporting AI use at least a few times a year in Q3 2025. Daily usage, however, remains limited to about 10% of the workforce and tends to be concentrated in specific roles and industries. Gallup’s findings also show that broader AI adoption correlates strongly with stronger managerial support for AI and with strategic integration of AI into individual roles.
