San Antonio's beloved Oscar's Taco House, a staple for 63 years, has closed to make way for a city bridge. But the restaurant's owner, Alex Pruneda, is back with a new venture, Ava's Diner, just across the highway. This new eatery brings back some of the Tex-Mex classics that Oscar's was known for, including the popular puffy tacos, and maintains affordability with most items under $11. Customers can also enjoy chicken fried steak, enchiladas, burgers, and soups like menudo and tortilla soup. However, fried fish, a favorite at Oscar's, is not on the menu yet, leaving fans hoping for its return. Pruneda's decision to open another restaurant came after his recovery from cancer, a challenging journey that began during the closure of Oscar's. The new restaurant is named after his granddaughter, Ava, and his daughter, Angel Pruneda-Castro, has been instrumental in promoting the business on social media. Ava's Diner is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It's located at 643 Frio City Road, San Antonio, TX 78207. This story marks a new chapter in San Antonio's culinary landscape, with a familiar name returning to the scene.
