Former Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has been appointed as the new head coach of the All Blacks, marking a surprising turn of events three years after his dismissal from the same role. Despite his previous success, Rennie's return to the All Blacks comes with a new challenge: leading the team through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will be hosted in Australia. This appointment replaces Scott Robertson, who stepped down unexpectedly in January following an end-of-season review. Robertson's tenure saw the All Blacks win 20 out of 27 Tests. Rennie's time with the Wallabies ended dramatically after three seasons, with his contract terminated in early 2023. This led to a controversial decision by Rugby Australia to turn to Eddie Jones, who later guided the Wallabies to their earliest Rugby World Cup exit in tournament history. Now, Rennie, of Cook Islands heritage, becomes the first All Blacks head coach with Pasifika roots. He expressed his honor and pride in a New Zealand Rugby statement, emphasizing his clear vision for the team's playing style and his eagerness to collaborate with players, management, and the rugby community. Rennie's coaching prowess is evident in his achievements, including consecutive Super Rugby titles with the Chiefs in 2012 and 2013, as well as coaching New Zealand to three consecutive Junior World Championships between 2008 and 2010. Currently, he is coaching the Japanese club Kobelco Kobe Steelers and will return to New Zealand for the All Blacks' July home series against France, Italy, and Ireland. Interestingly, his appointment coincides with the ACT Brumbies' decision to extend Stephen Larkham's contract as their head coach, with Larkham previously linked to a potential role on the All Blacks' coaching staff.
