Girard Water Main Break: Repairs Done, Boil Advisory Issued (2026)

Girard's Water Crisis: A Tale of Main Breaks and Boil Advisories

The residents of Beechwood Avenue, nestled between Park Avenue and Churchill Road, are currently facing a boil advisory, as confirmed by the Girard Water Department. This advisory comes in the wake of a water main break that occurred on Monday, causing a temporary water outage for 44 homes along the avenue.

The repair process, led by Girard Water Superintendent Mike Scoville, concluded by 6:30 p.m. However, the aftermath of the break has sparked a precautionary boil advisory. Scoville explained that this advisory is a safety measure due to the potential for water line depressurization and the risk of contamination.

The Girard Water Department emphasizes that boiling water only eliminates bacteria, not lead. To ensure safety, residents are advised to use cold water from their taps for boiling, as hot water may release lead contaminants from standard faucets. According to EPA guidelines, boiling water for at least one minute is necessary to kill potential bacteria, or residents can opt for bottled water.

The department's guidelines further specify that boiled water should be used for essential activities such as drinking, making ice, washing dishes, food preparation, and brushing teeth. The advisory will remain in effect for approximately two to three days, during which two negative samples are required before it can be lifted.

This situation highlights the delicate balance between water infrastructure maintenance and public health, inviting residents to remain vigilant and follow the necessary precautions.
