IK Multimedia elevates Sunset Sound Studio Reverb II to new sonic heights by reimagining legendary room acoustics for today’s mixing desk. If you’ve ever wished to mix inside the Hollywood studio that made history, this is as close as you’ll get. Sunset Sound Studio Reverb II is more than a simple update to the T-RackS plugin; it’s a substantial expansion that brings authentic space and movement to your mix.
The big headline is IK’s Volumetric Response Modelling technology, or VRM. Unlike the conventional, static convolution used by many reverb plugins, VRM records how a room actually responds to different positions, directions, and acoustic setups. The result is a reverb that breathes and shifts with your project, rather than sitting passively in the background.
Version II expands to all three of Sunset Sound’s renowned studios, offering up to 27 distinct live room source positions per studio. Each position was captured as a unique acoustic event rather than being recreated through interpolation, which preserves early reflections and spatial perspective in a way that interpolated impulse responses often can’t. Studios 1 and 3 also include variable dampening modeling, allowing you to adjust absorption characteristics and reshape decay to mirror the studio’s own adjustable acoustic panels.
Two fully independent reverb engines run in parallel, greatly expanding what you can do. You can mix live rooms with chambers, isolation booths, EMT plates, and AKG spring reverbs, each with its own EQ, stereo control, and routing. This setup pushes the plugin beyond ordinary room emulation into true spatial production territory.
For size control, Sunset Sound doesn’t merely scale decay time. It dynamically stretches or compresses the impulse response from 0% to 200%, while preserving the original capture’s tonal character and spatial behavior. This means you can tighten a large space or expand a smaller one into something cinematic without losing the clarity of early reflections.
Rounding out the package are two console signal path emulations—the API/DeMedio Sunset Sound Custom and the Class-A Discrete NEVE 8880—adding harmonic depth and tonal character drawn from the studio’s own vintage gear. The included library now features 336 stereo impulse responses from the live rooms alone, a substantial upgrade over the original version.
