The Ultimate Showdown: Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria - A Fight That Could Define MMA's Future
In the world of MMA, where epic battles leave fans craving for more, one fight stands out as the potential pinnacle of the sport. Khabib Nurmagomedov, a legend in his own right, believes that the clash between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria could be the biggest event MMA has ever seen, surpassing even the highly anticipated Jon Jones vs. Alex Pereira matchup.
This Saturday, Makhachev steps into the octagon at UFC 322, aiming to claim the welterweight title against Jack Della Maddalena. It's a bold move, as Makhachev previously held the lightweight championship, successfully defending it four times. But the path to this fight opened up when Topuria seized the vacant lightweight belt with an impressive knockout of Charles Oliveira.
While their paths currently diverge, the prospect of a future encounter between Makhachev and Topuria lingers, whether it's at 155 or 170 pounds. And here's where it gets controversial: Nurmagomedov believes this matchup would be bigger than the oft-discussed Jones vs. Pereira fight.
"Topuria-Islam could be the biggest fight right now," Nurmagomedov asserted in a YouTube interview. "Not Jon Jones and Pereira."
Jones, a legend in MMA, has an impressive record of 28 wins in 30 bouts, with only a disqualification loss and a controversial knockout of Daniel Cormier marring his otherwise flawless record. Despite his retirement in June, Jones has expressed interest in returning for the proposed UFC White House event in 2026, with Pereira often mentioned as a potential opponent.
Pereira, also 38, currently holds the UFC light heavyweight championship, a title Jones defended 11 times, and briefly held the middleweight championship as well. Both fighters are eager for this historic matchup, but Nurmagomedov believes Makhachev vs. Topuria would be an even bigger spectacle.
"It's still a big fight, but not on that level," Nurmagomedov said of Jones vs. Pereira. "I don't think it's the same caliber."
When asked about the UFC White House card, Nurmagomedov suggested that Jones vs. Pereira would be more fitting as a showcase bout, given the location. "It should be American fighters representing their country," he explained. "A Georgian vs. Russian fight wouldn't be as interesting in front of the White House."
So, who do you think would win in a hypothetical matchup between Makhachev and Topuria? And is the Jones vs. Pereira fight overhyped, or does it still hold the potential to be a historic event? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
