The Argungu Fishing Festival's 61st edition kicked off with a bang, quite literally! The grandest catch of the festival, weighing a staggering 59 kilograms, was revealed by the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, on Saturday afternoon. This record-breaking fish was caught by Abubakar Usman from Maiyama Local Government Area, who emerged as the overall winner of the fishing competition. The festival, which attracted thousands of fishermen, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from Nigeria and beyond, was a spectacle of excitement and tradition.
The festival's opening ceremony was a sight to behold, with a massive crowd surge just minutes after noon, even before the formal opening ceremony and the arrival of President Bola Tinubu. The competition saw Abdullahi Garba from Argungu claiming second place with a 40kg fish, while Nasir Garba and another contestant jointly secured third position with 33kg catches. The winners were rewarded handsomely, with the overall winner receiving two Toyota vehicles, bags of WACOT rice, and a cash prize of ₦1 million. The second-place winner got a car, a Hajj slot, and ₦1 million, while the joint third-place winners were awarded two motorcycles each and ₦750,000.
