Stahl Furniture Moves After 50 Years: New Location, Bigger Space, Fresh Start (2026)

In a significant shift for the local retail landscape, Stahl Furniture, a beloved establishment on South Walnut Street for nearly half a century, is embarking on a new chapter by relocating to Bloomington's west side. This move comes as a response to ongoing challenges posed by the rising issue of homelessness in the neighborhood, which has impacted local businesses.

Owner Ty Osborne expressed his frustrations back in September, noting, "We love Bloomington, but with the homeless issue in this town, it makes it very difficult to do business." He elaborated on how these circumstances have not only led to a drop in revenue but also resulted in substantial costs for business owners who frequently face the need to clean up after disturbances.

After an extensive search lasting several months, Osborne announced that he found a promising new location—the former At Home site on West Third Street. "We're going to open this up now and close the old one down by the end of the year, and we'll be over here permanently for a long time," he shared with optimism about the change.

The new store boasts nearly 100,000 square feet of space, a remarkable increase compared to the previous location, which had almost five times less floor area. This expansion opens up exciting opportunities for the business, including the potential revival of their outdoor summer tent sale, an event he had to cancel this year due to incidents of vandalism.

Meanwhile, the original South Walnut building is currently listed on the market for $1.75 million, indicating a significant transition in both the business and the neighborhood’s commercial dynamics.

This move raises intriguing questions about the interplay between social issues and local businesses. How do you think such challenges impact the viability of longstanding establishments? What solutions might help bridge the gap between community needs and business sustainability? Share your thoughts in the comments!
