But here's where it gets even more impactful: Asda Hartlepool, for the very first time, is opening its doors to nine young adults with additional needs and/or autism, offering them a unique opportunity to gain real-world work experience and build a brighter future.
This groundbreaking partnership between Hartlepool Borough Council, DFN Project Search, and local employers like Asda provides a structured, hands-on learning environment for individuals aged 16-24. Over nine months, interns dive into various store departments, from fresh produce to George clothing, mastering practical skills, time management, and communication. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about learning tasks; it's about discovering hidden talents, building confidence, and fostering independence, all while continuing education and receiving support from dedicated job coaches and mentors.
The results speak for themselves. Noah Hunter, 19, beams, “It gives me a reason to get out there, to be productive, and I’m loving it. My confidence has soared, and I’m even better at managing my time now. The Asda team is amazing – always supportive and encouraging.” Aimee Mitchell, 20, echoes this sentiment: “I feel proud and happy coming to work each day. I’m excited to see what the next few months hold.”
Councillor Aaron Roy, Vice-Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Adult Services and Public Health Committee, celebrates Asda’s involvement: “This partnership is a testament to the faith employers are placing in this program.
